Rhetorical Analysis Of Trump's Presidential Campaign

Speeches are used for many purposes; inspiring, informing, influencing or entertaining people. During the United States presidential campaign many candidates give speeches around the country, trying to influence people to vote for them. One such candidate is Republican presidential nominee Donald J. Trump, who is a successful businessman, television personality, and author, which he mentions briefly in his speech announcing his presidential campaign. This speech is significant as it is the first of many that Trump will give concerning his presidential campaign.

He begins his speech by commenting on the great number of people who are present, mentioning how nice it is and thanking them for coming. He mentions how great it is “to be in a wonderful city”, which is in turn a compliment to the audience as most of them would live in this city. He then makes a joke about Rick Perry, who was sweating early during his speech. This humour humanises Trump as it shows he can make jokes. This could however be perceived as an attack on Perry instead. Immediately after this he turns his humour towards Lincoln Chaffee and his less-than-full audience. As Trump makes these jokes towards fellow candidates he shows his confidence and that he is not afraid of them. Later on he mentions current president Barack Obama. When Obama was first elected Trump said “The one thing I think he’ll do well. I think

This makes his overall speech easy to listen to as his short, repeated sentences allow the audience to easily comprehend his message for the most part, even when he references numbers. If statistics are used too often they can confuse an audience if many different statistics are thrown at them, however when Trump mixes statistics with short sentences they become easy to hear and understand, especially when he repeats them. This way of speaking makes the audience absorb more than if the speech was harder to

Trump has issued new executive orders that have shocked not only Americans, but also people from all over the world. Basically what these orders are to do is that they are intended to ban Muslims from seven countries from entering the United States. Even those who have been living in America for quite a while are to be deported to their countries. What is more devastating is that students who had their student visas from their home countries to come study in the USA are no more welcomed here and have to face these new abnormal orders. I think the new executive order is definitely intended to discriminate against Muslims because there were no terrorist attacks performed from people who are from these 7 countries in the U.S.…

Liberals are already in shock. There is a level of incredulity that far surpasses their puzzlement at the election and re-election of GW and Cheney. Moderate liberals, who believe that socioeconomic change happens gradually and with compromise, are already wondering what has happened to the entire federal government. Also, Democrats (not all of whom are "Liberals") tend to believe that all people should be treated with respect. In fact, they pretty much assume that's obvious.…

“(We have) more to do for the young woman in East St. Louis, and thousands more like her, who has the grades, has the drive, has the will, but doesn’t have the money to go to college (Obama, para 6).” Interestingly, he follows this statement with an attempt to dissatisfy one of the commonplace arguments against liberal policies. Mr. Obama says that these people do not ‘expect that government will solve all of their problems,’ but that they are willing to work hard in order to achieve their dreams. This seems to solidify Obama’s ethos with the audience, especially when combined with the specific scenarios that he uses to exemplify the need for his policies. The middle section of the speech is dedicated to the 2004 Presidential Election.…

Donald Trump was an unexpected runner for this year’s presidential election. At first, many people thought his running for the presidency was a joke. Unfortunately, as time went on, what many thought to be a joke suddenly became more serious as more and more people began to show him support and he shows no sign of dropping out anytime soon. Which is unfortunate since much of what he says is far from being presidential, let alone professional. From what I’ve seen of his speeches and debates, he often makes terrible statements about other candidates as well as other groups of people, building off of peoples hate to rally more support.…

The slogan that propelled Donald Trump into his influence across the nation, “make America great again,” shows that Trump sees America has fallen downhill and has hopes to improve it. Trump wants to see this country go back to the prosperous country it once was, but he does not know how to filter his words according to most, which makes him seem frightening. Despite Clinton’s accusation about the risk of Donald Trump, his clever use of scare tactics gives voters a sense of security because of his ideas concerning immigration and terrorism. According to Molly Ball, author of “Donald Trump and the Politics of Fear,” Donald Trump uses fear to his advantage in hopes of winning the presidential election.…

Donald Trump is doing what would normally be considered unthinkable. A normal politician running for any office, let alone President of the United States, would never skip a nationally televised debate days before the first votes are cast. But Donald Trump is no normal politician and this is no normal election cycle. His rallies are often filled with thousands and thousands of people often with a few protesters who falsely call him a racist, for all the previous debates his strategy has been to unleash a nuclear bomb like attack on the first person on the stage that mentions his name. This time he has dropped that bomb on FOX News and Roger Ailes.…

One device he used at the very beginning of his speech was anaphora. He says, “our fellow citizens, our way of life, our very freedom..” The device was used to show a solemn tone. President Bush wants the people to know that even though the attacks were serious, he has everything under control. The climax at the beginning makes it clear how serious the attacks were because he says “our way of life, our very freedom” it shows that another country terrorized us and took away part of our freedom and especially our way of life.…

The inaugural address made by the 45th president of the United States, like any president before him, had its fair share of soaring rhetoric. It was short, but defiant and will go down as one of the shortest inaugural speeches delivered in modern history. The New York Post observes the shortest speech ever delivered goes to George Washington for his second inaugural in 1793. The speech was bleak in its tone, but fiery in its delivery, yet it offered promise for a better future to many. Trump makes use of rhetorical techniques and as Romm, J. (2016) explains, it succeeds in getting the attention of the people and making ideas stick in their minds.…

Obama displays himself as someone who they can trust and listen to. In addition, by starting his speech this way, Obama shows how thankful he is to be a citizen of America and indirectly implies that every citizen should be just as proud to be a citizen of America. Obama then continues on to the next portion of his speech, which encompasses what he hopes to see America accomplish in the future. The “climax” of his speech is in Obama’s last section, which contains the whole reason in why Obama made the speech in the first place and…

This stresses certain words and makes it well-understandable: “a country where they have access to the best schools (…) – a country that lives up to its legacy (…)” (l. 13 f.). Another important device is the tautology, that is used in the whole speech. Obama often repeats himself to stress the message his words convey and to ensure that the audience understands what he is trying to point out.…
