In “The President’s War Message, December 8, 1941”, President Franklin D. Roosevelt addresses the attacks on Pearl Harbor by the Japanese in 1941. He addresses the people of the United States during this unexpected time assuring them their safety and the defeat of Japan. On December 7, 1941, Japanese planes bombed the stationed U.S naval fleet consisting of the ships: the USS Arizona, the USS Oklahoma, and the USS Utah, in the Philippines which killed over 2,400 naval and military personnel, including citizens on the island. The ships were eventually sunk or badly damaged. The attack also came as a surprise to U.S government officials, who were in the works of negotiations with the Japanese.
