The use of the words ‘unprovoked, dastardly and onslaught’ set the tone for the speech. These are words that incite emotion in the American people. These are words that remind me of the brutality of the Japanese, the cold-bloodedness of the Japanese, and the treachery of the Japanese. These words also provoke feelings of sorrow. They paint vivid images of the carnage at Pearl Harbor. They paint images of dying soldiers and family members receiving news of dead loved ones. This terrifies me. The thought of my son dying at war is terrifying. The idea that he may be on the receiving end of an onslaught is something that kept me awake during the night. I cannot begin to fathom how it would feel that letter or message saying that my son had died. This is why this speech has left me so conflicted. On one hand I feel that we must avenge the ill-fated men and women at Pearl Harbor and bring the Japanese to justice but on the other hand I understand that if America does go into war, there is a good chance that my son wont
