According to the iSpeak textbook, name calling is defined as “the fallacy that unfairly categorizes people by slapping a label on them.” John Oliver directed the fallacy of name calling toward Donald Trump when he used these two phrases, “Miss USA for instance is owned by Donald Trump, a clown made of mummified foreskin and cotton candy.” He also responds to Donald Trump’s rude comment about how looking beautiful is necessary in certain jobs like Miss USA and as a news reporter by saying, “It is a little ironic that the Miss USA beauty pageant is overseen by one of the ugliest souls on the planet.” Even though these phrases were harsh and of course a bit mean, I think they were both very well thought out and quite effective. In all reality, if only “beauty on the outside” is required for a famous, publicized job, more than likely Donald Trump wouldn’t qualify as he is of the older age, and well quite frankly, isn’t as handsome as he may think or claim to be! Also, as people who are regularly seen by the public eye should be so called “classy”, Donald Trump would fall far from that scale as many people may tend to see him as someone who is full of himself, rude, and speaks his mind without considering other’s feelings (Nelson, Titsworth, & Pearson, 2014; Oliver, John Oliver Miss America Pageant Script, …show more content…
As stated in the iSpeak textbook, the argument from an analogy is defined as “comparing two things that are not obviously similar.” The analogy used in this speech is actually quite hilarious as John is responding to how the Miss America Pageant Organization answering machine states that they are “the world’s largest provider of scholarships for women.” John states, “That is like Walter White saying “Hello and welcome to this regular carwash that’s definitely not laundering money from our meth lab.” This has to be one of the greatest analogies that anyone could’ve came up with because the analogy literally and effectively compares two different extremes! Walter White is a huge meth dealer in the TV show Breaking Bad and the Miss America Pageant is filled with women who only represent the good, legal, and professional aspect of everything. This analogy is also successfully portrayed as it shows how the Miss America Pageant is trying to cover up a huge lie about as good as a hugely sought out meth dealer tries to hide a multi-million dollar meth lab (AMC, 2014; Nelson, Titsworth, & Pearson, 2014; Oliver, John Oliver Miss America Pageant Script,
