Rhetorical Analysis Paper
The Golden Chain of Love written by Dorothy Hunt is a Buddhist recitation based on the belief that all living things are interconnected through and cared for by Amida Buddha. In the saying, each link is valuable and has a moral responsibility to take care of each other because one’s happiness or unhappiness does not only depend on their own actions but also that of others. It encourages everyone to keep their link bright and strong by striving “to think pure and beautiful thoughts, to say pure and beautiful words, and to do pure and beautiful deeds” to achieve a world in perfect peace (Alba 160). The Kairos, time and place, of the recitation will be explained first as it contributes a great deal to supplying context behind the purpose the author intended the Golden Chain of Love to have. Being one of the few teachings that anyone heard in English it became an integral part in spreading Buddhism to the English-speaking population. Thus, the analysis will include information about the importance of it being written in English during the time when not sticking to traditions came with controversy and challenges. To continue, a linguistic analysis will be conducted to explore how the language and word choice was used to separate the Buddhist recitation from Christian hymns. Until present day, temples, reverends, Bishops, teachers, and students alike continue the challenge of spreading Buddhism to the English-speaking world. By writing the Golden Chain in English, Dorothy was able to challenge the norm of the time and create/ reach a larger audience. By slowly leading their writings away from Christian connotations, the Hunts helped Buddhism in America begin to stand on its own alongside the dominant religions. All thanks to the Hunts determination to overcome old traditions, more people have access to teachings and written materials such as the Golden Chain of Love. Now despite race, origin, or even religion, Americans can read and apply the Golden Chain of Love to their daily life in their own way and help promote world
