In my rhetorical analysis, I studied Wilson and Gutierrez’s article “Advertising and People of Color” which was published on July 1st, 1985. The authors describe the scrutiny that people of color face in advertisements due to the stereotyped images that White consumers hold. I found complication in describing how the rhetoric appeals actually affected the audience and going into a deep analysis. I wrote this essay thinking that since a majority of my claim was implied and did not require explanation. I did find that as a reviewer of peer reviews, I strengthened my understanding of many bullet requirements which allowed me to apply it to my writing. Do you think of an overweight, undereducated nanny? What about a Mexican-American man? Are you picturing a gun-slinging, sombrero-wearing cowboy? In the article “Advertising and People of Color” published July 1st, 1985, the authors Clint C. Wilson and Felix Gutiérrez describe how advertisers portray people of color after negative stereotypes for their Caucasian viewers pleasure. They expand on not only the portrayal of African-Americans, but the portrayal of Latinos and Asians as well to make the western- Caucasian consumers aware of the prejudice attention minorities receive and why. Wilson and Gutiérrez effectively appeal to their audience by referencing recognizable advertisements that portray minorities of color, presenting varying and strong logistical statistics, as well as provoking empathy to bring awareness to the viewers of advertisements and consumers which establishes ethos, logos, and …show more content…
In mentioning that advertisers hired people of color to sell their product, they successfully conveyed that the reasoning of their portrayal was due to the stereotypical image that the advertiser’s White audience holds of minorities.
