Rhetorical Analysis Of Taylor Swift's 'Blank Space'

The media perceives Taylor Swift as nothing more than a clingy, manipulative, and crazy young woman who jumps from relationship to relationship. Being the lyrical genius she is, Swift created the song "Blank Space" in 2014 to defend her position with this preconceived notion. She uses many rhetorical devices to explain her position in this argument against the media. With the beneficial use of rhetorical devices, Taylor Swift shows that boys will only stay if it is worth a fight, and that she is fully conscious of the media representation.

The lyrics alone pack a lot of meaning into the near 4 minute duration of the song. When first heard it can be easy to mistake it for another pop song with little to no meaning at all. However, the lyrics

The tone of the song is very upbeat and therefore contradicts with the entire analysis of the lyrics. As an audience, it can be inferred that Swift uses this cheery tone to make it seem just like all of the other tunes in todays pop culture. As soon as the music video begins, the audience is introduced to the male that Swift is in relations with. He is seen getting out of a fancy and rare car; this makes him seem just as fancy and rare as his car. The next scene displays Taylor Swift in bed with her breakfast laying next to her and a cat draped on her hand. This simple depiction proves that she is a high maintenance, needy girlfriend. The occasion of this video is set in a mansion. The castle served as one of the inspirations for Jay Gatsby 's estate in F. Scott Fitzgerald 's The Great Gatsby. This Gatsby reference relates to the lyrics, "new money, suit and tie" (Swift). Symbolism with an apple is used toward the end of the music video. Swift 's character grips the apple very tightly and eventually the camera angle switches to reveal the male choking on an apple. This proves that Taylor is truly in

My Personal Playlist and Transcendental Justification Icarus, Bastille, 2011 I personally love this song simply because of the Greek Mythology reference, as well as the really cool entrance; and I think that transcendentalists might like it as well. My interpretation of this song is that it is talking about how young people search for happiness by doing dangerous and risky things (i.e. Icarus got excited and flew up towards the sun), that may lead to them getting hurt (the sun melting the wax off of Icarus’s wings and him falling to his death. Transcendentalists would like this interpretation, because they believe that although people try to bring happiness into their lives by relying on material things (ex. Drugs and Alcohol), this will never…

Tom Buchanan is the husband of our so called wrong girl. His life is based more upon his own opinion and morals than what society deems as correct. Neither of the two are the perfect man, but then again, the 1920’s is not perfect either.…

and George Weiss symbolically connected the colors of nature to the colors of mankind. This powerful theme of the song worked to send a message of acceptance for all races despite their skin colors, and I personally take that message to the heart. There’s an optimistic tone to the song with lines like “I see babies crying, I watch them grow”, this gives off a sense of serenity and hopeful view of the future. This is also why I chose this particular piece, the songwriters’ and I share the same sentiment of opposing pessimism and proclaiming a brighter tomorrow.…

The novel follows Gatsby’s progress to a relationship with Daisy, then his downfall when she rejects him. Through the iconic voice of Holden Caulfield, an estranged adolescent, one hears a cry for help emerge from the clouds of depression so effortlessly that nearly everyone, regardless of background, relates. As evident within J. D. Salinger’s The Catcher in the Rye, and particularly during chapter 20, Salinger utilizes casual diction, relatable syntax, and a symbolic setting to convey Holden’s great dejection and introspection about death itself. With such a strong rhetorical technique as this, Salinger appeals to the empathy of the audience and creates a nearly universal cult-following for Holden. Although undeservingly idealized, Holden’s struggle to find meaning and happiness in this passage suggests a greater, underlying aspect throughout…

Interestingly, as she describes each action that he took, she blames that action on some attribute of the woman he was involved with. Throughout the entirety of the song, there is a dearth of any information that could put the “other woman” at fault, such as her knowing that the man pursuing her at the bar is in a relationship, or that she was making a conscious decision to intervene in someone else’s relationship. In other words, the “other woman” was viewed as an object for sex and aggression, even by Underwood herself. This is not an uncommon theme in country music, as mostly male, but occasionally female singers, often include themes of men ‘playing the field,’ in search of sexual encounters, and women as sexual prizes, not to mention sexual violence and nonconsensual sex, all of which can be found in the “Before He Cheats” lyrics (van Oosten et al., 2015). While such themes are now being identified and challenged in modern entertainment, this song has not been a part of this movement, mainly because it is a woman negatively targeting another woman.…

Have you ever heard a song that has impacted your life? Songs are a form of art that allows artists to express their feelings in a form of music. Songs can be interrupted in many ways; some songs have a more literal meaning, while other songs require you to interpret the lyrics to understand the deeper meaning. Artists often use figurative, metaphorical, and poetic elements in their songs to help develop the overall message. The use of figurative terms in a song leaves the interpretation of the song broad and allows the listener to have their own meaning of the song.…
