Ryan Lewis is a well-known producer, musician and DJ. On September of 2009, Ryan uploaded a short film to YouTube called Fake Empire, which conveys a powerful message with great meaning. The title of the short film essentially means to be consumed and controlled by a company or technological industry. This definition is implied by the way the lead actor is portrayed throughout the short film. The film points out how the major companies and technology industries think they’re “empires” and can control people; however, they only achieve all their power through the dollars and attention given to them by consumers. Of the three rhetorical devices, logos would be the one to be expressed the most in the film. He provides his reasoning for the film in the song lyrics that are played repeatedly during the film, which say, “Were half awake in a fake empire,” as flashes of random people appear. Implying that there is not a certain type of person that living a fake life. Anyone can be controlled to where it becomes an addiction as well as a routing. On an interview done by S.S.G on YouTube Ryan explains his idea and meaning of the film. His thesis originated in Cape Town, South Africa, where he was able to compare the American way of life with internet to the African way of life. On that same interview, Ryan claimed that “by having all this modernized technology, we are depriving ourselves to solely depend on technology.” Instead of people controlling the use of technology their letting technology control them. Technology is not a real life it is something that masks and takes away from humanity, takes away the real human interaction and it takes away the beauty of living life outside of the corporative and technological world. People that are dependent on the mainstream companies and technology may not realize that they have a fake.
