On May 1 at 11:35 P.M. EDT, President Barack Obama delivered a speech declaring the death of Osama Bin Laden. Osama Bin Laden is the leader of the terrorist group al Qaeda. Al Qaeda is responsible for the tragic events such as 9/11, shootings, and bombings against innocents. In President Barack Obama’s speech he is able to connect with his audience using pronouns such as “us” “we” “our”. Obama is establishing the connection that he has with the people and that not only were the citizens affected by the events of 9/11, but he was as well. The audience in his speech is primarily to the American citizens. The death of Osama Bin Laden is a victory for not only the American citizens, but the people around the world that were affected by the tragic events of al Qaeda. President Obama was the one to initiate the killing of Osama Bin Laden and since his team has successfully taken him down, Obama is able to deliver the message of Bin Laden’s death. President Obama uses pathos effectively to bring out the emotions of the audience. Obama first addresses the events of 9/11 and the depressing effects the event had for the people that were affected. Many family members, friends, acquaintances, and many others were lost in the incident and that justice would be served. In the mood of mourning and sadness, the country is able to unite and support one another. Pathos and ethos are both used effectively throughout the speech, but Obama uses logos the most. Obama gives clear rational ideas of how the events of 9/11 affected everyone. He states the investigation that has taken many years to find the whereabouts of Osama.
