The internationally known, Phil Knight, invested time in designing the “coolest” shoes. Knight wanted these shoes to capture the attention of everyone around the world. After a few meetings, it was imperative to name the company, Nike. This brand sparked the lives of not only people who wanted to look cool but for athletes as well. Nike is such an essential brand for everyone 's closet— It is rare not to find a pair of Nike’s laying around in a house. This brand has been a story of success and fame— however, it has also been a story with complications along the way. The complications involve the use of sweatshops. This piece of rhetoric in the medium of a cartoon states that Nike is contradicting a healthy life, and are also promoting abuse. In this cartoon the creator uses black and white colors to obtain the viewers’ attention. The creator avoids distractions because the secondary and primary audiences are witnesses to the absurd violence that is happening in third world factories. The colors explain the raw abuse that employees are facing day by day with the employers. Another Implied claim is that the swoosh conveys motion. In the picture the swoosh is used as a weapon to physically hurt the employees. The swoosh is described to be simple and fast, just how it is simple and fast to manipulate workers into doing tasks that are dangerous, or painful for the workers. Although the swoosh is a translation for victory, there is not enough victory being made for the workers. The slogan “Just Do It” signifies the demanding power Nike has over the employees. The employer in the cartoon is dictating the workers to “Just Do It” and stop complaining otherwise …show more content…
In addition, promoting abuse has also caused trauma for workers. Many employees have suffered from psychological damage to their brains because of the constant abusive behaviors that they are faced with on a daily basis. Nike promotes abuse by having factories in third world countries. These factories are placed in third countries because most of the population is in biggest need for survival— they are willing to work at any cost. Nike took advantage of a third world country to produce high quality shoes for a low labor price, which leads up to the expensive products that are on the market. Many families will also send their kids to work at an early age because they need to help their family financially. This makes sense because Nike is trying to prevent people from gaining an education for a better job.
