Julia Roberts soft, soothing, yet apathetic voice is the perfect choice to play our mother nature. Hollywood’s actress Julia Roberts, is most commonly known for her role in Pretty Woman, playing opposite Richard Gere, but has been in many various movies and television shows in which she plays strong independent female roles that refuse to back down in adversity. The choice to use Julia Roberts in this commercial makes an immediate connection to ethos because of the extreme popularity of the Pretty Woman movie, as well as the actress herself. Commonly in most messages they appeal to the viewer with pictures of burning trees, destroyed homes, or dying animals, this is not the case in the “Nature is Speaking” commercial. In “Nature is Speaking” we view serene pictures of many different untouched “wild” landscapes. The voice of Julia Roberts shocks the viewer’s perspective causing us to feel small and belittled, saying that she has fed species greater than humans and has starved species greater than humans. This commercial makes you want to evolve with nature to survive instead of the self-destructive path we are currently headed down. In the end she asks if we are willing to evolve, not telling us, not forcing us, just asking if we want to survive or die because either way, no matter what we choose, nature will survive. The long and short of it is that we are polluting our planet. We are cutting down our forests faster than our trees can grow, but we aren’t really thinking about the long term effect this has on our fate as a species. People don’t like to think about where our resources come from, but it’s going to be hard to think at all without the trees that produce oxygen. Also its going to be pretty hard to survive when we have no clean water to drink or food to eat. Also it’s going to be hard to escape from modern society to collect our thoughts without forests or parks. It might be easier to change when we
