The purpose of Dalton Sherman’s speech, “Do You Believe in Me” at the Back-to-School Convocation in Dallas, Texas in 2008, was to inspire and encourage area teachers before the beginning of a new school year. The speech sough to inspire a renewed sense of purpose and encourage teachers to believe in their students, their colleagues and the work they will be doing. Also calling to attention the needs of many of his fellow students and his belief in himself is motivated by many of his teachers (as well as family).

Humor – in connection with his audience, Dalton incorporate humor when asking the teachers if they were up for the challenge he was calling them to:
“You better, because next week, we’re all showing up in your schools” (Sherman, 2008).
8. Pauses – also to emphasize or allow the audience to take in all that he was saying, Dalton included pauses during his speech.
“As just one example of this young man’s personal speaking strength, consider the opening to his speech. Despite standing before 20,000 while delivering this keynote address, Dalton Sherman still has the presence to wait for applause to die down before beginning [0:30 – 0:39]. Many adults have the tendency to talk over the audience applause, but he avoids this temptation” (Dlugan, 2008).
In Nancy Duarte’s Ted Talk, Uncovers Common Structure of Greatest Communicators, in which draws the conclusion that call-to-action stories and speeches have a common architecture. Nancy describes a 5-part (Freytag’s) story structure: exposition, rising action, climax, falling action and denouement, which gives a story an arc which is a shape.
