Cellphones are advertised with many messages hidden within the ads, we just don’t pay attention to them, but we do notice them enough to pick up those messages. Those messages are delivered to us rhetorically and to be more specific, the companies use pathos to get us to notice them. Apple’s home page has a large picture of the new iPhone 7 and 7 plus, both beautiful phones if clicked on send you to a page dedicated to them only. After clicking the ad, the first thing you see is a short message saying “This is 7” (2017). This message is important, because anyone who knows Apple understands the iPhone 7 is the 9th iPhone and that it’s a big deal in the smart phone community. So when the audience sees those words together they are hooked into the phone already because those words appeal to them in the form of pathos. The Apple.com ad also includes sections about the camera, new features, and performance. These sections also include certain words that rhetorically appeal to you. This language allows the reader to infer that the phone will be packed with new features that the Samsung won’t offer. The reason behind all of this is because in a socially connected society through the internet, most people are a like in a way of knowing the latest trends and following them, so owning a new phone that is in a way exclusive because of its price makes you stand out, because you own the flagship device.
