Analysis Of Talking Back By Bell Hooks

Upon entry of the story “Talking Back,” by Bell Hooks she declares that “talking back” means speaking as an equal to an authority figure. “It meant daring to disagree and sometimes it just meant having an opinion,” (Hooks 152). Hooks states that she apprehends that women of different races should be able to express their opinions, not just inside the household but also out. She then reveals some of her early trials as a writer and the complications with being a female, African American child (Hooks). In my opinion, being a female with sympathy on the subject of achieving women 's rights, I do agree to an extent with what Hooks has declared. However, the problem with secondary education is that as a student, they told me exactly what to write and exactly how to complete the assignments/projects. There was no room for a creative mind to speak her opinion in fear of being exposed as an individual completely different from the rest. In high school, I feel that the students just wanted to blend in and pray for this epoch to quicken its pace so that they may depart from that wretched place. So yet again, as a result of listening to the teachers in secondary education tell me what to finish and how to accomplish it, I have never found my own …show more content…
The term “talking back,” is not just speaking to someone of higher authority as if you were an equal, nevertheless it also means to have your own opinion (Hooks). All women should not be obligated to search for their voice in a society or school system, but they should be treated with equal respect. However, when they are given the power and the opportunity to speak, one should have confidence and the audacity to speak her mind. In schools today such as secondary education, it has ceased the using of one’s opinion or being creative. In college, moreover, students are expected to have opinions and be creative with their voice as they see from other students’ perspectives. In my search for my voice and continued education I will respect the proper authoritative figures and learn from their knowledge. Listening to the wisdom of others to benefit my perspective will be my utmost ponderous goal of achieving my liberated
