For one of my text production tasks I chose to write a descriptive piece inspired by a 3 km time trial for field umpiring. My target was 13.30 which was the required time to umpire division 1 football. The purpose of the text was to capture my thoughts and feelings going into this event. I portrayed this by using a wide variety of language techniques, to express my experiences and emotions in the strongest way. “I pass an old pepper tree who is not amused, it’s knotted bough stares at me like beady cat eyes, telling me to make haste and be gone”. The old pepper tree acts as a metaphor as it represents internal struggles and inner dialogue of whether I will achieve the goal of running under 13.30 in the 3 km time trial. “I pass an old pepper tree who is not amused” is symbolic of my internal dialogue which is negative, “it’s knotted bough stares at me like beady cat eyes” symbolises my tense body as negative energies flow through my veins. “Telling me to make haste and be gone,” as I become aware of my physical and mental state a small part of me recognises that to achieve my goal I need to shift my mindset.
