Liberal Art vs STEM
In “The Liberal Arts are Dead: Long Live the Liberal Arts” Whalen states how it’s necessary to studying Liberal Studies, by how it gets readers to think and how to build arguments; He says, “A sound liberal arts education aims precisely to sharpen readers and thinkers in their use of such arguments and amusements. It aims precisely to prepare minds and hearts for a world loud with all manner of persuasion, much of it good, much more of it not so good.”In the article, Whalen used ethos, pathos, and logos effectively to make his disagreement that the sciences must learn the art of rhetoric in order to create sound hypotheses.”Then he describes how many people have objections to liberal arts but, he says it's not Liberal Arts that's the problem. He uses an example about how people shouldn’t follow everyone. He says, “ Put another way if one’s doctor suggests treating a sprained ankle by shaking a dried gourd at the full moon, one does not give up on medicine; one finds another doctor.” He is stating that just because Liberal Arts is defined by other people that it’s not important you shouldn’t either. The author uses effective reasoning to convince his audience that even if Liberal Arts was bad not all professors teach it the same(Whalen). David Whalen intended to advocate the importance of liberal arts. Whalen explains those people had wrong interactions with the wrong professors or colleges and one shouldn’t give up for what they believe in, as long as one has a good intellect and sympathy they can find the right education.
