Harrison Bergeron by Kurt Vonnegut, Jr. is a science fiction story that communicates lessons of new technological advances that could be developed in the future and some of the outcomes these advancements can cause. The passage Harrison Bergeron is a story of the future that tells about several people who live in a civilization that is affected with an invention that is known as the handicap. George is a human that acceptingly has a mental handicap, but others, such as Harrison, have the handicaps and despise them. The narrator describes the handicaps when they state, “Nobody was smarter than anybody else. Nobody was better looking than anybody else. Nobody was stronger or quicker than anybody else” (1). This text shows that the technological advance called a handicap was created by the government at an attempt to achieve human equality. Handicaps can vary from weights that a person must carry to equalize their strength, to a mask intended to cover up a person’s beauty. The handicaps were designed/assigned for anyone who is above average in any possible trait as an attempt to make them equal to the people who are normal. The ballerinas in the story have handicaps that add weight to their bodies in order for them to dance the same as anybody else would. For example, in the modern day schooling system no two students will do exactly the same in their academics. One student may excel in their grades, and he or she may pass the school year with an A average. However, another student may receive B’s or C’s on their report card and still meet the requirements to pass the school year. Another example of diversity among humans is how no two people have the exact same taste in style. One person may decide to wear trending clothes from a popular store in the mall. On the other hand, a different person may prefer to wear clothing that is made by hand or from a well-known seamstress. The clothing that each person prefers to wear may appear to be different in style, however, all the clothing is intended for the same purpose. The final example of modern differences in humanity is how no two people are equally as wealthy. One person may be considered “rich” with enough access money to live on for the rest of his or her life. Conversely, another person may only have enough money to get them to afford their necessities for each month. Both people stated possess certain amounts of money, but the exact amount of money that each person has is different.
