Abraham Lincoln, easily one of the most notable presidents of all time, delivered this incredible yet heartbreaking speech on the 19th of November in 1863. It was delivered during the aftermath of the Battle of Gettysburg, often regarded as the most important battle of the American Civil War. The speech is also recognized as one of the best speeches of all time. President Lincoln made sure to include all forms of persuasion in his speech, it may not seem like it when looked at directly. But when further analyzed you can understand how he was able to captivate the audience and further generations.
President Lincoln uses Pathos more than anything in this speech. He acknowledges the sacrifices made during this battle, and assures the audience that their demise was not in vain. Towards the end of the speech he stated that if they only focus on the bloodshed and are constantly mourning, then the war will never end. Now this may not be considered a direct fact, but it turned out to be true. When soldiers let regret and sorrow fill their hearts, they would not be motivated to fight. Another small but good example of logic was when President Lincoln explained that “When the original founding fathers came to this continent, they did so with the idea that All Men are Created Equally.” This is indeed a very factual statement, in the second paragraph of the Declaration of Independence it holds the following statement “We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness.” The appeals to logic are not easily recognizable, but they are there, you just have to find
