According to the LLD 100A course reader, rhetoric is a study of how effective “communication achieves its goals.” All writers use rhetorical strategies in their writing no matter whether they are writing an article, lab report, financial statement, newsletters, or simply a letter. Rhetorical strategies are referring to pattern of organization such as analysis of cause and effect, division and classification, exemplification, definitions, comparison and contrast, process analysis etc. It is important to recognize how figures of speech affect readers and be able to use them effectively to persuade and communicate. New York Times published the article on October 31, 2012. Throughout the article DeFeo kept general population in his mind, but the audience he wants to catch the attention the most are people who are beginners or want to learn how to invest like finance student. He explains how learning to invest is an important life lesson. Beginner doesn’t need to be college educated to start investing, in fact, they doesn’t need to be a high school graduate. They only need to have a basic understanding of business and have the confidence to make a plan for their life. Throughout the article, DeFeo mentions why investing can be scary, but it won’t stop people for doing it. Also, he states the goal of investing, persuading people to invest for their own future good. He specifies whether people should invest with their money or pay down debt. The most important section in his article is to learn how to value a company, if people want to buy stock.
