The Rhetoric of Deforestation
The first image, entitled WWF: Lungs, is an anti-deforestation advertisement published by the World Wildlife Fund, a group well-known and respected for its conservation work. The WWF has become an authority on environmental subjects, such as deforestation. The image consists primarily of a forest shaped like a pair of lungs, with part of the forest/lung gone. The color scheme has been changed in the area where the forest has been cut down. The colors shift from a deep green to a dark brown. In the case of the forest, this shift symbolizes death, provoking an incredibly emotional response from the viewer. However, the text on the advertisement, “Before it is too late,” assists in clarifying the visual, showing that the creator not only wants to draw attention to the deforestation problem, they want to end it.
WWF: Trees is another image created to increase awareness of deforestation. This image was also created by the World Wildlife Fund, a fact that lends the image credibility. The image contains a field, in which all but one of many trees have been chopped down, the remnants of these trees scattered across the ground. Those who presumably chopped down the trees are resting and eating under the lone tree left standing.
The picture was taken near the middle of the when the sun was high above, as is evident from the shadows on the ground. The area under the shade of the tree is would be most comfortable, away from the sharp rays of the scorching sun. This makes the fact that those who cut down the trees are resting beneath the last one standing. They are relaxing in comfort looking out on a forest that no longer exists. This creates an emotional response from the viewer, an angry response, as the cutters seem completely unaffected by what they have just been instrumental in

    The forest represents the fear of the Puritan society: a place where darkness and disorder exists and a place where people like Hester Prynne and Dimmesdale can be their true selves or even hide more secrets.
