In the novel A Thousand Splendid Suns the author, Khaled Hosseini, portrays powerful messages through sophisticated linguistic techniques. He takes advantage of a popular rhetorical device called a Christ figure to strengthen his argument and cement his intended lessons into the reader. Christ figures are not always a mirror image of Christ himself, but do symbolize him in certain aspects. The only reason Nana endured was to raise Mariam and prepare her for the real world. Nana gave up everything she knew to teach Mariam the “only one skill a woman needs in life…to endure” (18). Nana sacrifices herself by living in a rugged “kolba” and living in constant agony of seeing Jalil interact with her daughter. Nana also displays her Christ figure traits when she tells Mariam an aphorism. She says, “Like a compass needle that points north, a man’s accusing finger always finds a woman. You remember that, Mariam” (7). Dialogues like this between Nana and Mariam allow Nana to be a savior for Mariam. Eventually, Mariam will need this information to endure and survive in her husband’s hostile company. As Nana teaches Mariam about life as a woman, Mariam’s curiosity of the outside world and hope for what it contains grows. Nana provides Mariam a reason to leave the kolba as she dreads living with her mother and wants to explore the city in hopes of a purposeful future. Hosseini includes Nana as a tragic twist to a Christ Figure to indirectly portray hope in the direst conditions.
