Irony is when a series of events that turn out to be the contrary to what you expected. When Desiree realized that her husband seemed bothered by something, she started noticing that their baby was different. The fact that the baby was not white was pretty strange and unexpected, which brings us to the part of the story where Armand proclaims to Desiree that she is not white and that the child was not white either. “that the child is not white; it means that you are not white.”(Chopin 3). Even more Ironic is that Desiree just so happens to not know her past and therefore Armand blames her automatically. “My mother, they tell me i am not white. Armand has told me i am not white...You must know it is not true.”(Chopin 3), Desiree wrote to her mother in panic asking her for answers. Armand ,after letting his family leave in despair, goes mad by burning all of Desiree’s belongings and finds a letter that will lead the story on a whole new direction. This is where the story gets paradoxical, because Armand reads the letter his mother had written to his dad and it turns out that she wasn’t white. “ ...his mother, who adores him, belongs to the race that is cursed with the brand of slavery.”(Chopin 4), unfortunately the author ends the story there so we don’t exactly know how Armand reacts to
