Rhabdomyolysis is a condition that results from the breakdown of muscle fibers. When the muscle is damaged, a substance called myoglobin is released into the bloodstream. This substance normally helps the muscle use oxygen. When released into the bloodstream, it is filtered out of the bloodstream by the kidneys. Myoglobin may block up the kidneys and cause damage, such as kidney failure. It also breaks down into other toxic substances that can damage the kidneys.
CAUSES
This condition is caused by the release of myoglobin that occurs when muscle fibers are damaged. The muscle damage may come from a physical injury to the muscle. It can also result from:
• High fever (hyperthermia).
• Seizures (convulsions).
