Reza's 'Ava': A Short Story

Improved Essays
It’s as easy as breathing.

An action done without thought.

Air through one set of lungs and out a set made completely different.

Simple as that.

Reza does this without worry. No fear in his movements. One second on two legs the next on four. The wolf was born into him, it’s heart pressed into every cell of his own. There is no barrier between them. It’s what makes this so easy for him.

He stretches his legs, letting his chest touch the dewy grass. The world feels so much more vivid when he shifts. The colors are muted in places but what he lacks in visual he makes up for with each sniff of his nose. It’s more intense now. Lines of smell that form vapour trails in his mind. Reza doesn’t even need his eyes.

There’s a howl in the distance, he pricks his ears forward to listen in, letting his inner wolf translate.

Oliver.

His beta.

A change that made his brother tolerable again.

The hall outside his room is dark, but the main floor is still bright. He steps on the boards he knows don’t creak and takes his time with the stairs. There’s no reason for silence, he takes one step from the main floor and she looks up from her spot at the main window.

Ava. His brothers human.

Ava smiles at him and it looks warm like the fire still roaring in the fireplace. “I didn’t realize you were still in.” Her voice is accented like the others from Vallance. A clear distinction from the Chelsea accent he and Reza have. Finn likes the softness of it, can understand why Reza loves listening to her read.

“Wanted to watch them go. Better view from my window.” He shrugs, sitting down crossways in an arm chair. The old fabric of it still smells like cinnamon and flowery perfume. Distinctive smells of Ember. She must have been sitting there while she waited for the boys.

“Not going to join them tonight?” She sounds like his brother. Finn will have to start telling Reza off for brainwashing her into bugging him

The figurative language interspersed within the passage is also highly effective, causing an air of mystery, wonder, and respect. It helps to illustrate the man's feelings towards the wolf as well, without directly stating them. Cormac McCarthy tells of how "The eye turned toward the fire gave back no light", this quote helps compound the mystery of the wolf, having it seemingly consume the firelight with its eyes; maintaining dominance over its surroundings even in death. The man's respect for the wolf is apparent through the figurative language as he personifies her, believing the world to be ordained by God for her; The same God she is "among which she was among and not separate from". A great sense of wonder and mystery is conveyed through…

Imagery, poetic language, and the use of personification and other devices all serve one common purpose; to make the reader truly believe that they are living in what they are reading. Authors attempt to create portal doors in their writing for a sense of escape to an alternate world. Arthur Miller, an American playwright, essayist, and prominent twentieth century figure, devised one of the most infamous philosophical and allegorical “portal door” through the power of words and his direct use of poetic language. The Crucible, Set in Salem, 1692, a small segment was added before the first dialogue expressing the prelude to the upcoming events.…

Humans dedicate their whole lives in ensuring their survival by getting jobs to provide basic needs and making friends and companions to not have to rough through the struggles of life alone. This form of survival deals with those who are blessed with freedom; the freedom to work, speak out, love, laugh and most importantly live. However, there are circumstances in which these freedoms are suppressed and where one’s own life is taken out of the individual's control and where the only means of survival are limited to the mind and chance.…
