Rex Walls Stay Home

Most parents do the best for their children. Unfortunately for Jeannette and her three other siblings, both their mom and dad act in horrible ways, whether it is not financially supporting them or not feeding them. However, it is quite apparent that the mom is the worse of the two. While the father shows compassion towards the four children, there is ample evidence of the mom never helping out her own kids, even during dire times. Rosemary, the mom, is the more terrible parent than Rex, the dad.

Rex Walls is an incredibly bad parent to his four children in many ways. When Lori is trying to move out of Welch and go to New York for college, Rex attempts to make her stay home by ruining the art project she is going to submit. Instead of explaining

Throughout the story, there are many instances where she acts so horrible that it makes the reader wonder how the children survived under her lack of supervision. One example is the time in Welch when the children are all starving and then they see their own mother stuffing her face with chocolate and trying to hide it from her own hungry kids. Instead of owning up to the fact that she is putting her needs above those of her own children, she begins crying and explaining how she is chocoholic just like how Rex is an alcoholic. Another time that shows her dreadful behavior is when Jeannette and Lori have to force Rosemary to take a teaching job. The girls even have to correct her papers because she's too lazy to correct them herself and whines when she has to work, like saying, “Why do I always have to be the one who earns money?” (Pg. 218). This quote perfectly shows her attitude as parent who is whiney, uncaring, and lazy. Sadly, the family is kept in poverty by the mother because of her petty needs, lazy attitude, and selfish actions. Rex gets fired and can’t express himself to his family, but he, at least, looks for work and genuinely loves them. Rosemary never shows any sign of affection towards her kids and, unlike Rex, has to be forced to work. Throughout the book Rosemary is the worse

As we continue to read Jeannette’s story, we see the way she was abused by her family and other people they have come across; we are also able to see that the parents don’t act upon what’s going on with their children. With Jeannette’s alcoholic father and her mother who is nothing but selfinterested who only cared about her own happiness than her own children, causes Jeannette to struggle to take care of her family, especially her siblings. The parents have neglected their children physically and emotionally which caused their children to being too skinny due to malnutrition, bad hygiene, and frequently unsupervised during unsafe situations and…

Jeannette’s parents were giving the wrong examples like using inappropriate language and setting bad examples. Rex and Rose Mary had a dispute that caused Rose to get out of the car: “Dad stuck his head out of the window as he drove, hollering at mom, calling her a ‘stupid whore’ and a ‘stinking cunt’” (43). Dad’s action is showing Jeannette and her siblings that using inappropriate language is okay to say. Rex calling Rose these…

While this provides the reader with a lot of information on the negative affects of parental negligence, this story may not be suitable for all viewers. This story is certainly dark compared to other memoirs. Sadly, this story is not fiction and is a true recollection of Jeannette Walls childhood. I personally would not recommend this for future book lists. Only because it may put a negative stigma on any type of “free-thinking” parenting…

As Rex quipped, “Someone sure as hell gutted ol’ Oz, didn’t they?” This insinuated that he had no idea about the money missing from the piggy bank, though that was clearly not the case. He then tries to make himself look heroic by telling Lori that if she was hell-bent on living in that cesspool (New York), then he’d finance her trip himself. Not only is this intentionally falsely optimistic, it is slightly delusional and a perfect example of how Rex justifies his actions and fails to take accountability even when he is undeniably at fault. Overall, Rex Walls does not fail to prove how irresponsible and deceitful he is as a result of his alcohol addiction.…

Rose Mary came from a rich family where her mother was a school teacher and provided for her very well. Rex came from a family who worked with what they had and although they had food on the table, his living conditions weren’t always the best.
