Mandatory minimum sentences are the amount of time a prisoner must spend in jail. Mandatory sentencing is typically used for people that are convicted of a violent crime committed. Some inmates are surprisingly given mandatory minimum sentencing for drug possession. Often criticisms are involved with citizens feeling this shouldn’t apply to drug possession because a lot of people get hocked and it was a moment of weakness to give into drugs. They believe drugs and violent crimes should not be compared. It seems to be talked about in movies and on the street when someone talks about jail. The reason it is talked about is because the chances of being a victim of sexual assault is high. It is trying to be controlled by setting forth the Prison Rape Elimination Act (PREA). This act was set forth to find out when and where sexual assault was happening behind bars to prevent future attacks. By placing more guards in areas know for sexual assault there would be less chances to be a victimized. It’s difficult to stop sexual assault because it happens when police are not around. There is always going to be chances for an inmate to take advantage of someone. If we stop sexual assault in one area, there will be a different spot the inmate will attack in. The problem for correctional officers is it’s their responsibility to keep them safe so if they get attacked and guards are not able to stop it then correctional officers failed to do their job.
