Rewards In Ender's Game

“Victorious warriors win first and then go to war, while defeated warriors go to war first and then seek to win”(Tzu). Warriors that win first and then go to war spend months, maybe years, preparing for war. John Perry from the novel Old Man’s War by John Scalzi and Ender Wiggin from the novel Ender’s Game by Orson Scott Card both exemplify this prepare first mentality, which comes out in their battles. Perry practices patience before he attacks the Rraey by studying how to kill them, then uses his new two shot technique to obliterate the Rraey forces. Ender wins first in a different way. Ender goes to school for almost six years to hone his techniques that he will use in battle. Per Liptak, these new strategies and techniques that Perry and …show more content…
The first reward is youth and the second is a new planet to call home. The only drawback to these rewards is that the only way for him to preserve these rewards is by fighting for the CDF and surviving for ten or more years. This deal may seem appealing to most people, but it comes with two major drawbacks. The draftee must relinquish his body and his old life on Earth. “John Perry agrees to give up both when, at the age of 75, he signs his life away to the colonial defense force” (Scalzi 15). This decision meant that he would no longer be able to live as an elderly man on Earth. He will miss future grandchildren births or memories that are valuable to people when they are near death. He does not only sign away his old life on Earth, he signs away his old body as well. While he rides on the ship to boot camp, “Perry loses his reliable body that has been through thick and thin with him and replaces it with a new and unknown green body” (89). This decision dehumanizes Perry and completely separates him from his old life on Earth. However, these prices do come with some great rewards. By losing his old body and old age, Perry can go on new adventures in his new body. “His new body is only 50 years old” (82). Perry now gets to live new experiences as a mature elder in a 50-year-old body. This means that he can live life with no regrets because he knows the feeling of regretting something for the rest of his life. This no regrets …show more content…
Since Ender went to Battle School with the intention of saving the world and following through with his destiny, he received safety and respect. “Battle School saved ender from his abusive relationship with his Peter” (Card 15). Peter would constantly play astronauts versus buggers against Ender, which was just an excuse for Peter to choke and threaten to kill Ender. Battle School kept Ender alive long enough for him to fulfill his destiny. Ender “destroyed [the buggers] completely”, which ended the threat of a Bugger invasion” (297). Since there was no more threat, Ender now had peace of mind, he did not have to fight anymore, and he was famous. Ender becomes “a governor of a planet that him and Valentine colonize” (315). Ender was finally getting recognized for his hard work. However, this was not the first time he earned the respect of his peers. At Battle School, Ender earned the respect of his army. Dragon army respected Ender so much, “that they trusted his strategy and would attack the opponent even though the war games were being rigged against them” (216). Ender earned their respect because of his stern, yet friendly attitude. Sadly, the war and these rigged games took a terrible toll on Ender. Ender lost his childhood and his innocence all for the survival of humanity. “At the age of 6,

Ender was an isolated, third born young man who was raised knowing he had to defeat the buggers. He was forced by his family and the government who told him he was born for one reason and one reason only, to defeat the buggers. At a young age, Ender was recruited into Battle School to learn how to fight the buggers and he did so well that he became the best commander and moved up to Command school to control the simulator. When he was fighting in the “simulated games”, he was actually fighting real buggers and was in real battles, but he didn’t find this out until every bugger was killed. The book was better than the movie because the book had more details and action while the movie left many details…
