The Importance Of Reward In Changing Behavior

Improved Essays
I think that reward is more effective in changing behavior. The reason why is because if you give a child a reward for being good or doing something good, there going to want to keep being good so that they can receive a reward. All there going to be thinking about is how there going to get that next reward and they know that if they 're bad, they won 't be receiving anything.

2.) I have a three-year-old brother who is always throwing tantrums. Me and my family thought that the terrible two 's would pass by quickly and that my little brother wouldnn 't be throwing fits at age three, but he still is. He cries when he doesn 't get his way and the crying lasts a long time. That is very normal though for a three-year-old to do, but I still love

2.) Positive reinforcement is adding something to a person 's environment; it 's the addition of something the person likes. An original example of positive reinforcement is a child finishing her dinner and is reinforced with dessert. Negative reinforcement is taking away something unpleasant; it 's the subtraction of something the person doesn 't like. An original example of negative performance is your calculus instructor saying that if you get A 's on all the exams during the quarter, you won 't have to take the cumulative final.

3.) A primary reinforcer is a reinforcer that is naturally rewarding, and usually has some connection to biological needs. Three primary reinforces are: food, water, and sexual contact. We don 't have to necessarily have to learn to like them. On the other hand, a partial reinforcement is only some instances of the response that are reinforced.

6.) A interval schedule of reinforcement is different from a ratio schedule because a interval schedule of reinforcement means that the reinforcement is available after a fixed amount of time has passed by. On the other hand, a fixed ratio schedule is a fixed number of responses is required before the reinforcement will occur. Fixed interval schedules will lead to much lower rates of response than fixed ratio schedules.

7.) A variable schedule of reinforcement is different from a fixed schedule because a variable schedule of reinforcement is the number of responses required before reinforcement that occurs varies (variable ratio schedule) and the amount of time before the reinforcement will be available varies (variable interval schedules). On the other hand, a fixed schedule is a fixed number of responses that is required before reinforcement even occurs (fixed ratio schedule) and the reinforcement is available after a fixed amount of time has passed by (fixed interval

One garden shrub equals $5 it is a fixed number as he always gets paid the same amount per shrub. The ratio in this example is 1:5 since each garden shrub equals $5. In Operant Conditioning some factual points that stood out to me were two-forms of positive and negative reinforcement and punishment. With the use of positive and negative reinforcement to increase or decrease a behavior could be rewarding in molding behaviors in most cases. With the use of operant conditioning, this could also be a great tool to use outside of the classroom. (Positive reinforcement) If a Childs (Behavior) is good during class (Consequence) a parent could praise them on it and treat them out, etc., for such good behavior at school and then (future behavior) the child would continue their progress of behaving in class.…

Punishment verses Rewards The use of positive reinforcement has a much better outcome than if punishment were to be used, This was the idea of B.F. Skinner, a well-known psychologist from the 1970’s who enlightened the world with his behavioral techniques. Skinner believed that the use of positive reinforcement helped to shape a beings behavior verses punishment. He proved his theory when he trained his rats to push a lever by frequent and scheduled rewards and birds to peck plates using his positive reinforcement ideas. He wanted to take his knowledge of positive reinforcement and apply it to mankind and to improve mankind’s behavior and learning technique.…

Since I do not have kids, I asked my parents how they performed the time-out method when I was a kid, in which their answer consisted of having me sit in a chair, facing the wall and telling me to be quiet, not to move, and to think about why I am being punished. The time-out only lasted for a few minutes, if I behaved during the process. If I were to have talked, moved or continued misbehaving I would have stayed in time-out longer until I did the time out correctly, thus shows my parents effectively performing acts of reinforcement. In this case, it is called negative reinforcement which King (2008) defines as the frequency of a behavior increases because it is followed by the removal of something undesirable. Basically, hoping my good behavior would increase to avoid the undesirable punishment of a time-out with a slight chance I would never have to endure time-outs again.…

S., (1989), operant conditioning is “learning in which a voluntary response is strengthened or weakened, depending on its favorable or unfavorable consequences.” In the late 19th century psychologists Edward Thorndike came up with the Law of Effect; it wasn’t until later in the early 1900’s a psychologist named B.F. Skinner who extended the idea of operant conditioning. Within this research Skinner used several principles while studying operant conditioning: positive reinforcement, negative reinforcement, positive punishment, and negative punishment to name a few. Positive and negative reinforcement are neither good nor bad. For instance, positive reinforcement would be something like running a race and receiving a medal for the place you finished.…
