Revising A Writing Tutor

Decent Essays
Writing is incredibly important for any student in college because it's the basis of your work. Therefore having a writing tutor is a huge privilege. The expectations I have about going to a writing tutor is that he or she will help me come up with ideas for my writing assignments, as well as for the drafting and revising aspects of it. He or she will also find flaws in my writing assignments and give me input in order to become a better writer. I envision my writing session as me sitting with my writing tutor going over the instructions for a writing assignment if I have not started yet, or revising my paper if I'm close to finishing it.

Seaman High School, where I attend, offers the Writing Center, ran by students and staff is to help improve…

PADM 302 Course Reflection My primary goals for this course were to improve my writing skills in two specific ways. I wanted to be able to write with greater speed, but with apparent quality, and I wanted to be clearer in my writing. I had two strategies in mind to meet these goals. The first included becoming proficient at writing outlines and frameworks, which, I thought, would help me better adhere to my objectives for the papers I write. The second strategy was to learn methods by which I could become more concise in writing which would enable me to more powerfully present the points I wish to deliver in papers.…

However, after the administration of the QRI-5, I learned that Jamie is on an independent level for word recognition and is on the instructional comprehension level. By the post-assessment Jamie could still read with an independent word recognition but her comprehension core decreased to frustration. The first QRI-5 that was administered the student was unfamiliar with the reading with a low 33%. According to Boyles (2004), “teachers talk with students to monitor their progress as well as to set goals and help them solve problems” (p.75). Teachers should conduct writing conferences in order to assess and evaluate the writing progress of their students. The purpose of writing conferences is finding the strengths and weaknesses of their writing to improve and develop the skills the student already has. Depending on the students writing the teacher facilitates interventions to improve the students writing skills. Teachers should frequently plan writing conferences to check-in on their students and the progress they have made.…

If a tutor and tutee are having great conversation in the Writing Center, the tutor can specifically focus where a student needs the most help. Great questions will allow the tutee to see exactly what is necessary to improve his or her writing. There are many more qualities that a charming man and a writing tutor share, but appearing confident, asking great questions, giving meaningful and specific compliments, and leaving a positive image are a few of the most important. If you were to ask me about my high school writing experience, I would tell you that I did not have much experience. We did not have any classes at my school that were specifically writing classes. At my high school, we just had regular English classes where we would occasionally do a few papers in. My English teacher senior year was a great person, but did not necessarily teach us a lot about proper styles of writing papers. Coming into college English, I did not feel well prepared with what to expect for a college level writing class.…

It has been nearly a month since my last brief analysis was written and during those weeks my hours at work have been many and my opportunities with tutoring have been few. However, I did have an interesting encounter during one of my shifts in the writing center. This encounter was also consequently my first actual session with a tutee at the center. Holding high expectations of myself, I drew from all of the knowledge that I had retained during my classes and readings and hoped for the best as my first student writer walked through the door. It soon became prevalently clear, though, that this session would be a challenge for me.…
