The assassination of President James Garfield happened occurred at 9:30am on July 2nd, 1881; only four months into his term as 20th president in the United States. He was shot by Charles J. Guiteau inside of the Baltimore and Potomac Railroad Station in D.C.,but he didn’t die until 11 weeks later on september 19th, 1881; he was the second of four presidents to be assassinated and the longest to survive after being wounded. Garfield’s killer, Guiteau, was executed one year after his death. Guiteau had a history of mental illness and believed that “God” had told him to assassinate James.
