Knowing that it would most likely be parents reading her essay, she made herself relatable by mentioning that she is also a mother of four teenagers. Even the title of her essay is passive in order not to drive the parents away. Throughout the rest of the first paragraph, Anderson concessions with the parents point of view. Making herself more relatable and causes the parents to loosen up a bit.
In the next paragraph Anderson makes literature out to be a vehicle in which to learn about the world. She continues on to mention that it is a way to learn. She also mentions how it passes on values from one generation to the next. Then, at the end of the paragraph, Anderson emphasizes the statement “Books save lives”.
