Review Of Wesley Scroggins's Argument About Censorship '

Wesley Scroggins said in an article,”Scroggins: Filthy books demeaning to Republic Schools education”, from Springfield News- Leader, that “In high school English classes, children are required to read and view material that should be classified as soft pornography”. He then goes on to say that Speak is an example of soft pornography, and shouldn’t be allowed in english curriculum. He believes that this book should be censored in school districts. Laurie Halse Anderson wrote an essay, “A Comment about Censorship”, replying to his, and many other people’s opinions that Speak should be censored from the english curriculum. Although some parents believe that some books are inappropriate for school, they actually teach values from one generation to the next. …show more content…
Knowing that it would most likely be parents reading her essay, she made herself relatable by mentioning that she is also a mother of four teenagers. Even the title of her essay is passive in order not to drive the parents away. Throughout the rest of the first paragraph, Anderson concessions with the parents point of view. Making herself more relatable and causes the parents to loosen up a bit.
In the next paragraph Anderson makes literature out to be a vehicle in which to learn about the world. She continues on to mention that it is a way to learn. She also mentions how it passes on values from one generation to the next. Then, at the end of the paragraph, Anderson emphasizes the statement “Books save lives”. Throughout this whole paragraph, Anderson makes literature out to be a tool in which to enlighten teenagers, not a weapon to be used to corrupt
