Review Of The Poem 'That Is Hard By The Sea Of Dreams'

Decent Essays
When it says, “And the sick may forget to weep”, to me that means others are not happy, and wish they were not so sad; depressed.
To me, “But we may not enter in”, that is just like saying they don’t fit in with others, they can’t fit in.
“That is hard by the Sea of Dreams”, this is just saying it is hard to dream what you’ve wanted; it’s hard to have your dreams come true.

Only the first two lines of the second stanza give details about the dark place “we”(10) wish to leave. The remarkably short amount of time the speaker spends in the dark place is not to say that the trials of life are brief by circumstance, but by choice. The brevity of the darkness is a reminder to to not linger there. The reader gets a glimpse of hope when the speaker introduces the “flowers” (9) that are growing in the asphalt. The flower’s metaphorical purpose is to convince the reader to recognize hope, because it is indeed there, during difficult circumstances.…

I have chosen “The Fish” by Elizabeth Bishop. When referring to Americanness through American Literature I think this poem would be 1st degree. “The Fish” reflects in great detail about catching a fish and what the it looked like. I chose first degree because although it does not reflect political views or anything like that, it does reflect great detail which is what American Literature consists of. In my opinion typical Americanness would talk about guns and freedom.…

I am positive almost everyone has heard of the nursery rhyme “Sticks and Stones” the rhyme states that words should not affect you but I am sure we all can words do hurt. Personally Words do not have an effect on me as much as others. Growing up, my mother told me that the only words that mattered were the ones that I believed to be true and I believe that wholeheartedly. I have been called things like Mutt, Bastard, and have even referred as “You People” but I chose to not let those words bother me for the fact that I know they do not define me. Those words may not be my kryptonite, but if someone is to call me a Cotton Picker today I would be furious an outraged.…

The thoughts, desires, and memories of humans are a mystery to everyone in the world including themselves. As the persona of the poem a "Green Crab 's Shell" shows, the sad thing is that many people will never truly discover these things because they do not open themselves up and explore the deepest parts of their souls. The complex body of a dead crab is explored by the persona who compares it to a human and personifies it, to show that unlike the crab, humans have the ability to open themselves up and explore the mysterious chambers of themselves without having to die. The ability to enter oneself and discover the profound obscurities that the soul and mind hide is a tantalizing prospect that many would agree is worth dying for. The persona…

In the play Love’s Labour’s Lost, by William Shakespeare, five men, after swearing to not talk to women at all for three years, fall for five women. Hysterics ensue. In an effort to woo the women they have fallen for, these five men, composed of a King and his Lords and constituents, decide to write poetry. Unfortunately for them and the ladies they have fallen for, none of their works are particularly outstanding. However, compared to his four peers, Biron does the finest job of writing his poem, as he flatters the woman he is writing to, stays on topic, and acknowledges her intelligence and wisdom-- all things that are rare to find in the other poems.…

This poem is really interesting and caught my eye. When I read it, I didn’t know what to think of it at first. Then I went ahead and read it again and tried to see all the symbolism and imagery. I guess my favorite part of the poem is the way it connects with real life activity. When he describes how the footprints he left are forgotten, that happens to most people everyday.…

“Ariel” Sylvia Plath’s Ariel is one of the most renowned collections of poetry from the twentieth century. These poems were written during the last years of Plath’s life before she committed suicide and gives us a unique insight into the inner workings of her mind. Her estranged husband and fellow poet, Ted Hughes, published Ariel in 1965 after Plath’s suicide. In these poems Plath transcends to become her true self; the tone is cool, amused, bitter, and unnervingly charming. This collection is completely personal and confessional with a slight side of madness, knowing that the poems came from her last days give a haunting feeling to every line.…

This induces related thoughts in the reader, causing them to recall that in times of great distress, the well-being of their own psyche (Heart) depends on the ability of their mind (Head) to console it through rational thought. These two sections of the poem echo the overall theme: that all will experience great loss over the course of their time on Earth, and in these times of loss, the mind must assume the role of consoler to the spirit so that it may recover to its natural…

Throughout the poems that we have studied on Irish poets, there is an overarching theme of domestic interiors, particularly in the poetry of Vona Groarke. Throughout her writing, Groarke conveys this theme while captivating the reader with her words, as they are reading and her ability to maintain the readers interest throughout her work. Her themes are dark and depressive, but she also creates a speaker (the narrator) who questions their purpose in life and wonders why life has so many struggles. It examines the burden of life and the feelings of being trapped in the life they live. Through the theme of domestic interiors, Groarke infuses human feelings in certain objects while allowing for feelings and emotions to be placed in those inanimate…
