The class teaches that being impoverished doesn’t seem to result in drug abuse. Yet throughout the story of The Other Wes Moore, both Wes’s seem to deal with a lot of drug abuse from family and friends. The other Wes seems to experience drug abuse a lot. His older brother, Tony, is wrapped up deep in the drug selling game. Even with Tony constantly warning Wes to not get involved, Wes eventually becomes a drug dealer as well. He deals to a lot of people, he even watches the mother of his third and fourth children become extremely addicted to the drugs he is selling. When Wes was younger, one of his few memories of his father was of meeting him at his grandmother’s house when he was extremely drunk. His father was not allowed to be involved in his life because of this. Although the course teaches that living in poverty and drug addiction and use are not related, throughout the story this seems to be rampant. While unfortunately, in the case for the other Wes Moore, this cycle is one that they will never escape. For the other Wes, he ends up spending the rest of his life in prison because of his living situation and the oppression that he faces every day. For the author Wes, he is one of the lucky ones. He manages to escape this cycle of life that many believe is destined for him. Instead of succumbing to others beliefs, he makes something out of his life.
