Ray looked at me challengingly. I stared at the ground. Her gaze was terrifying. I have never seen a child so infuriated especially with someone they just met. I did not know what to do with her. Playing dolls and watching Disney movies was out of the question.

I leaned up against her wooden white door. “He is on a date with one right now.” Raye said bitterly. I could feel the resentment and pent up frustration in her voice. Mr. Haywires told me Raye lost her mother. She must be having a really hard time adjusting. Losing a parent is rough, I would know.
I spoke softly, “You know Raye it is perfectly natural that you Dad would want to find… companionship again. It does not mean he loves you or your Mother any less. When my Mom started dating three years after Father died I thought I would never forgive he-”
“It toke my Dad three days.”
My heart dropped. She could not mean that.
Raye continued, “Just. Three. Days. He started flirting with the lady who sold the coffins. Daddy called her simply ravishing. I remember because that is what Dad used to call Momma when she dressed up.”
“Raye I am so sorry.”
“It doesn’t matter. He is always like that. I just wish today could be different. Just today that is all want…”
Ray’s voice started to tremble. My heart ached. What an idiot I had been. I thought Raye was such a brat. Really she was just hurting. She never hated me. She was mad at her Dad.
