The Smell of Other People's Houses: No one knows yourself like you do In The Smell of Other People's Houses an old woman's tells Hanks “Nobody knows what it's like to be you. Nobody! Do you hear me? (Hitchcock 67).” This old woman was telling Hank that no one else knows what he has been through like he does. I do believe in this statement because, we have all been told to not judge someone before we walk a mile in their shoes. Everyone can learn from this, we all judge people or try not to judge people before we ever really get to know them. “I wonder if a person can really shake where they come from (Hitchcock 35).” Sometimes people do not really like the place that they are form or grew up so as they get older they want to leave

In the movie we see that Jack did not tell his grandmother that she was going to be moved into a nursing assisted living home until they found a home for her to move into. I felt as if Patty didn’t want to move into the nursing home because of the typical nursing home stereotypes but because her ties and mind were still at her house and in the town that she has forever lived in. The one stereotype and true fact this movie seemed too stick with was how caring for and elder take a total on our own lives. When taking care of a loved one we may have to change our own lives to do what is best for our loved one. We see this in Angel’s Prech when Jack has to change what he is going with his job to be able to stay with his grandma, but is also forced to recall the tragic loss of his wife and child.…

The movie, “The House I Live In”, opened my mind to stuff that I never knew before that has been going around in the United States for decades. Before this video I always had my mind set that, everyone who was involved in selling or consuming drugs should be locked up for a lot of years. Also, that they are all criminals. However, this movie changed my view towards them. Something that they mentioned in the movie that had me thinking since is, that before when people first started using drugs it was only used when people were depressed or going through a tough time.…

In Magical Urbanism, Mike Davis illustrates the growing influence of Latinos in reshaping and redefining urban spaces. Furthermore, David provides a glimpse at the reality experienced by many immigrants in the West Coast and the reaction of the natives that coexist with them in those spaces. While reading this, I thought of how far-removed my own experience as a Latina in the DMV area was from those depicted in the book. I could not, for example, relate the experiences of those Latinos living in the border having to deal with racial profiling by the local police, Border Patrol, and even the DEA (pg. 43). The themes that did resonate with my experience were those found in the chapters, “Buscando América” and “Disabling Spanish.”…

“You must keep writing. It will keep you free.” Art can be a powerful voice for people who can’t speak out about their own struggles, and Mango Street was written to show the harsh realities of life for chicanx and latinx people that are often overlooked. The House on Mango Street by Sandra Cisneros is a series of vignettes from the perspective of a young girl named Esperanza. The story follows her while she grows up in Chicago and has experiences that change her worldview and how she sees others.…

The characters in the Alfred Hitchcock production of “ The Landlady” were too different from the characterization in the short story. Billy, the main character, was very cheap and stayed in the hotel because it was only “five and sixpence a night.” The idea of Billy being cheap was barely recognizable in the movie. In the text this was an important feature because it was a key part of why he ignores his conscience. He sees that the lady is odd, but stays at the hotel because it is cheap.…

In today’s society most people look down on the prison culture. They view prison as a place filled with corruption, drugs, sex, and pop culture likes to follow this trend. Michael Perry, the author, once expressed, “Never mock a pain you have never endured or judge a situation you have never been in.” As illustrated, it is wrong to judge someone based on their life experiences. The theme of House on Mango Street is prejudgment, it proves the point that to prejudge someone is unfair, because contributing factors in everyday lives of many people are uncontrollable such as income class, gender, and race. Starting off, to prejudge someone based on their social class is unfair, considering it is an uncontrollable factor in their life. Throughout the vignette, “The House on Mango Street”, the author characterized Esperanza’s house by saying, “ Paint peeling, wooden bars papa had nailed on the windows so we wouldn’t…

Great points! I appreciate you bringing the topic of negative home environments and it correlation to bullying into the discussion. I have to agree that children will imitate the behaviors that they see and experience at home, especially in cases of bullying were a child is made to feel powerless. In conjunction with this, research has shown that children who are bullied at home are more likely to be victims in their peer group as well (Schwartz, Dodge, Pettit, & Bates, 2000). As counselors, this can often make our jobs more difficult because, often we are dealing with two people who are in emotional pain: the victim and the bully who once was or currently is a victim in a different environment.…

Text 1 is an extract from “Martha Stewarts’s Homekeeping Handbook”, which was published in 2006. The main aim of the text is to inform the reader about the importance of cleaning products and remind them about the history of cleaning, and how it has changed. The author builds her argument through the use of contextual factors, stylistic features, and polyvocality. The text is targeted towards females who are interested in housekeeping. This is indicated when the author, Martha Stewart uses “homemaker” and the pronoun ‘she’ in conjunction, which can be associated to a stereotype in society of women having to clean houses.…

Can you imagine what it would be like to not be able to smell anything? Research shows that many people take their sense of smell for granted and would likely not consider losing it as a catastrophic thing. However, if you stop and think about how much of your daily life involves smell, it actually could be a terrible loss. Smell effects our emotions, our moods, enhances (or sometimes detracts from) our atmosphere, and most importantly, our sense of smell has a great deal to do with our sense of taste.…
