According to Bailey & Birch, “In your own job, if you find yourself in a situation where you have to decide if you should contact the parents of a client, there are some things to think about. Think about the time and place to meet with the parents and how to best present your case” (Bailey & Birch, 2017). Although this alludes to you meeting privately the privately with the parents the principles remain the same. The best time to meet with the parents would be a time that both of the parents have time to meet with the supervisor and Liz, and in a quiet, private, relaxing atmosphere and place. You should be very prepared for the meeting, so you can present your case to the parents, and be prepared to answer any of their questions to determine what is best for John. Should the meeting not go well and the parents get angry and feel you, the supervisor, and facility have overstepped their boundaries; everyone should be as calm as possible and set a further meeting to either come up with another solution or a possible move and implementation process.
Step 7: The evaluation of outcomes?
Documentation of the meeting is important to keep a record of what happened and outcomes. Possible changes to John’s program should be written down for implementation and for the record (guideline 2.11). Parent’s issues should be addressed and if possible an agreement determined, which should all go on record. The parent’s decisions should also go on file.
