Review Of Jayson Beaster-Jones's Lecture On 'Baby Driver'

This week’s core lecture was on “Baby Driver”, and students were able to see the movie. The movie was presented to allow the students to connect to a subject that has been presented in many lectures, and readings. For example, last week’s core friday “Hip-Hop: The Movement” emphasized on how music during a block party allowed people to feel united, and joy. In relation to the film, Jayson Beaster-Jones’ presentation "Music and Value: Participatory Performances" discussed how music brings, and unites people together. Then, “Baby Driver” connected to Patricia Lichtenstein lecture, "Language, Cognition, and Metaphor" on how music permits its audience to listen, and imagine a scenery. Including, “Baby Driver” is similar to Michael Bull’s article "The Audio-Visual iPod" that discusses how how aesthetics of urban life is ignored through the help of music, and how the iPod has provided a more accessible way to listen to it. Music in the article is defined as a way people become invisible, and can feel joy during their routine. Therefore, music allows individuals to escape, and feel according to the music they are listening to. Continuing, the main idea”Baby Driver” points out how music unites people together in relation to joy, and romance. For example, in the film the song “Easy” by Sky Ferreira reminds Baby, the main character, of his mother, and how they shared a bond over music because he loved to see her to sing. Then, the song “B-A-B-Y” by Carla Thomas is introduced when Baby encounters Debara, Baby’s love interests,and how he develops feelings for her. Also, throughout the film the audience can see how Baby uses the different iPods in his possession to determine in which mood he will be in.
