In Avi’s Story “How I Got My English A” Pokey finds himself going into school and not knowing how to spell, unlike the other kids do. While on his journey to learn to spell he meets his language arts teacher which leads him through the way of getting that english A. Miss Cannister Teaches him how to spell and read correctly, he comes along some obstacles such as not having confidence in himself. through the story Pokey slowly learns how to read and write like he always wanted to. Poky uses his language arts teacher to show that somebody can change completely with only a single person.

Miss canister is the only teacher that gets pokey, she teaches him a way that no other teacher would., which is having fun with it. They both joke around and laugh through the learning process. While they continue to try and learn , Pokey’s self confidence starts to get higher and higher every step of the way, Pokeys states “She wood smile - she did hav a nice one - but then she wood put down a mark for me which was usually toward the end of the alphabet” (19). They would always have a fun time learning.

Pokey learns that by learning from his mistakes is a better way of learning. Pokey also learns that just because he doesn’t know how to write or read that doesn’t mean that he is a bad person.
