Review Of Adeline Yen Mah's Chinese Cinderella

“Failure is the opportunity to begin more intelligently” -Henry Ford. Adeline had this mindset throughout her childhood, to do her best which benefited her in the long run. This give me the vigor and aspiration to do my personal best. Chinese Cinderella by Adeline Yen Mah is an inspirational story because she never gives up, she stood her ground, and kept her hopes up no matter the crisis.

One way the story was inspirational was she stood her ground while being hurt physically and mentally. While she was being abused, she drowned herself in school and work to get away from her miserable life. Day after day, she would have the anxiety of not knowing what she would get in trouble for the days ahead of her. Eventually, she put her mind to the test and competed in a playwriting competition. This event gave her the courage to tell father, “I want to go to college like my brothers.”(Yen Mah pg. 192)This made father realize she has potential and allowed her to go to college in England. In fact, by the end of the novel, she became very tough emotionally and physically. When she finally realized she was stronger than she thought, she said, “I am no longer a girl, but a warrior.”(pg. 53) This meant that she was not just an ordinary girl that goes to her school, but a fierce “warrior”. She also compared herself to Mulan saying, “I am a female warrior, like Mulan.”(pg. 53) Saying you are like Mulan is a somewhat big statement, but her characteristics fit this brave and courageous warrior named Mulan. Comparing the two, both were brave and daring but still obedient. Mulan did what no other daughter would do, she went into the military to replace her Father, and the military definitely isn't a safe space. Adeline didn't fight in the military, but always strove to do the best she could and took advantage of every opportunity she had. She always pushed herself to do the best she could, no matter
