These costumes conveyed information about the time, place, helped differentiate the characters. For instance the garments used were appropriate for what would have been worn during biblical times and also appropriate for the desert climate. The costumes also allowed for the minor characters to be distinguished from the major characters; such as Joseph's vibrant coat was very colorful and helped distinguish him from the other characters. In addition, the period of the costumes were very biblical. The costumes appeared to be made during this time period, which flowed very well with the actual time period of the performance. For instance, one of my favorite songs from Joseph and the Technicolor Dreamcoat is Go, Go, Joseph because it is very upbeat inspirational tune and is very catchy and mentions the baker and bar clerk who served very good gin. Another song from this musical that caught my attention was Joseph’s Coat which explained the envy that Joseph’s brothers had towards him, since his father truly favored Joseph since he reminded him of his wife. Furthermore, this playful song also illustrated the many colors of his coat such as red, yellow, black, peach, olive, rose, violent and blue.
In conclusion, the wonderful music in the production, the costume elements, and the use of the lighting elements were so wonderfully executed. This Broadway play has truly shed some light on musical theatre and I will be more willing to see another musical, maybe even attend an opera. This would be a great production for a catholic school to perform due to all of the biblical references and the comedy of the play, with maybe a modern twist. I would absolutely recommend someone to see this
