Jack Reacher happens upon a small desert town named Mother’s Rest. A woman named Michelle Chang approaches, mistaking him for her missing partner whose name is Keever. They start talking about her situation and Reacher decides to help her to find out the truth: what happened to Keever? The fact that he is missing gives Chang a great amount of worry as shown in this quote: “‘I know, he’s probably fine. He’s based out of Oklahoma City. It’s entirely possible that he had to run back for some other business. He’d have used the train, because of the roads’” (Child 24). There were several things that could have happened, including that maybe he simply took a vacation. In my opinion, I think there is a more dubious group involved. Reacher thinks this too because the locals in the town are acting very suspicious. Certain people in the town must know what happened to Keever and they do not want Chang to find out. A group of ten men even come up to Reacher’s and Chang’s rooms, forcing them to pack up and leave. At this point in the story, the reader does not know why the town is so hostile to Jack and Michelle. However, the reader already knows that Keever is dead because of the very first sentence of the book. It says “Moving a guy as big as Keever wasn’t easy. It was like trying to wrestle a king-size mattress off a waterbed. So they buried him close to the house” (Child 1). The truth behind why he is dead, I have yet to find
