Revenge and justice has many different meanings. In the story the “Bargain,” by A.B. Guthrie, Jr. In the story a man named Mr. Baumer wants a man named Slade to pay a bill. Instead Slade ended up twisting Mr. Baumer’s nose and breaking his hand. Understandably, Mr. Baumer is angry about what Slade did to him. When Slade’s death roles around the corner, the question that aroused is, “Is Mr. Baumer responsible for the death of Slade.” 3 pieces of evidence will explain why Mr. Baumer is not responsible for the death of Slade. The first reason for why Mr. Baumer is not responsible for the death of Slade is, Slade can’t read. “‘I don’t think it’s any good to send him a bill, Mr. Baumer.’ I said. ‘He can’t even read.’” This proves that Mr. Baumer is not responsible for the death of Slade, because if Slade could read, then he would be able to see the sign that read deadly poison. If Slade could read than he would not have drank the wood alcohol. …show more content…
Mr. Baumer later in the story would hire Slade as his freighter. In the story it said, But I told him this was honest-to-God business, like Baumer had told me to and there was a quart of whiskey right there in the store for him.” They say this, because the “whiskey” was actually wood alcohol. Wood alcohol is deadly poison and will kill instantly. They will think Mr. Baumer switched the whiskey with wood alcohol, but Slade was a thief. “That Slade. He steal whiskey.” When Slade worked as a freighter, he stole some of the quart of whiskey and hides the fact he stole it with a whittled peg. If Slade did not steal whiskey regularly, he would not have any reason to drink the
