“Revenge is an act of passion; vengeance of justice. Injuries are revenged; crimes are avenged.” This quote by Samuel Jackson represents the reflections of a character named Roger Chillingworth from the dark romantic novel by Nathaniel Hawthorne called The Scarlet Letter. Dimmesdale will eventually become consumed by his own hatred and becomes a victim of his own revenge. Hawthorne foreshadows the evil vengeance filled within Chillingworth in his first appearance in the story. Mr. Roger Chillingworth is described as a small deformed individual, with having one shoulder higher than the other. This is the defining moment of the story where Chillingworth ultimately accepted his defeat. And also plea’s his guilt to Dimmesdale. When Dimmesdale is finally about to die and leaves this earth, he also cries out and asks for God 's blessing on Chillingworth and to forgive him for his sin. "May God forgive thee!" said the minister. "Thou, too, hast deeply sinned” (Page 198). Now having Reverend Dimmesdale pass away from this world, this leaves Chillingworth entirely empty and with nothing to live for in his life. It 's as if Chillingworth no longer even existed anymore as a human being. For his source of life, sorely has been entirely centered around sucking the life out of his victim Reverend Dimmesdale. His whole life had been completely focused around his grievance for revenge, and now that this was impossible, he had no reason to live longer. And with the death of Reverend Dimmesdale, Chillingworth will soon die shortly after and will follow in his enemy 's footsteps. Now what makes Chillingworth’s death even more unusually strange, is that when the book is concluded Chillingworth has left his entire rich inheritance behind to his mortal enemy Roger Chillingworth and his former lover and wife Hester Prynne 's daughter Pearl. It 's almost clear to conclude that by Chillingworth doing this, he shows a sign of remorse for his behavior and seems to have almost apologized to Hester. And by this act, it ultimately shows that Chillingworth, although a devil like figure he was. This shows that although he was a beast of an individual, he still has a conscience and has a some amount of good within
