Improved Essays
Continuing on, the friendship between Reuven and Danny was chosen. “‘Reuven, listen to me. The Talmud says that a person should do two things for himself. One is to acquire a teacher. Do you remember the other? ‘Choose a friend,’ I said.” (Potok, 74). Off the bat, Reuven was to choose a friend. He chose Danny Saunders as his friend. Their friendship was chosen before it started. “‘I am happy my Daniel has chosen you for a friend.’” (Potok, 135). Danny has also chosen Reuven as his friend before the friendship actually even began. “‘Reuven, you… were a blessing to me. The Master of the Universe sent you to my son.’” (Potok, 267). Although, the friendship was chosen both by the two boys, it seems as if a higher power had thrown them together

Danny decides to become a psychologist so he can help people find peace and meaning through science. Although Reb Saunders failed to satisfy his son 's active mind with the answer that pain is simply to be endured as God 's will, Reb Saunders succeeded in teaching his son to deeply meditate the pain of the world. The way that Danny is so open to Freudian theory sets him apart from Reuven. Reuven says, “Freud contradicted everything I had ever learned.
