Reuseable Bags Letter To Editor

Decent Essays
After reading both the editorial and the letter to the editor i am leaning more towards the views supported by the letter to the editor. While i do support the aurgument that not useing reuseable bags are bad for the environment and are threaten wildlife,i dont think baning them out right and making everyone change to reusable shopping bags is the best idea.As stated by the letter to the editor many shop owners rely on tourist to make there living and most tourists do not bring nor intend to buy reuseable bags while staying in town. You must also take health concerns and cost to own into effect aswell.

Before putting this law into effect you must also think about the full effect it will have on the smaller shops and gift stores in the area.Think about the last time you went on a trip, if you went to a gift shop to buy something small and wanted to get a bag to carry it in,would you then want to have to buy a bag that you may or may not even use again?Passing this law would have greater effect on the smaller shops and gift stores in the area with the possiabletiy of losing out on money to other shops in the next town over who dont enforce this law.The cost of buying these reuseable bags may out weight the benifet to many small shop owners.

The argument required more for credibility. Summers needed data to counter the other issues that were against his opinion. The reusable bag is an alternative to plastic, an alternative with more problems than benefits. Summer addresses this but gave statistical data on this countering opinion. “San Francisco’s plastic bag ban in 207 resulted in a subsequent spike in hospital emergency room visits due to E.coli, salmonella, and campylobacter-related intestinal infectious diseases.”…

This act was actually good. In 1765, the Stamp Act passed and made the colonists buy a stamp showing that they payed for an item,it was a way for the Parliament to make money. The Parliament made it mandatory to revenue stamps for newspapers licenses, and other materials that were printed. This act was probably the worst act out there. Countries and cities everywhere are trying to ban the sale of plastic water bottles for many different reasons. Some reasons are for health environment and more, but is the ban worth it? I believe that states should start banning plastic water bottles. My fisrt reason I think we should ban plastic water bottles, even though people are recycling, it isn’t enough for how much plastic water bottles we buy, The author, Katy Steinmetz wrote, “""[The bottles] are not being thrown away … They are being recycled." While that's not true of all bottles in the Bay Area, San Francisco is ahead of the average American city -- about 13% of plastics are recycled nationwide.”…

This is sad. Not only is this sad, but this is also the basic root of our environmental problems, and will be until the ideologies of modern peoples change. The mall represents the lust for new and plenty; the major problem with this thought is that is not how the environmental world works. There will be times of plenty, but those times will not be always and forever; and people of today do not understand that the world is a give and take place. People’s ideas will need to change about how the world works, however until then the…

I certainly do believe recycling amongst other forms of keeping the environment clean (waste, water, and energy) should be continued because of its long term importance. Moreover, I do agree that individuals should not have to worry about keeping the environment clean but I do not agree with the argument Jensen is trying to make on how industry is to blame. Regardless individuals would be to blame since we run industries and have control over emission use and keeping the environment…

The way we neglect our ocean with heavy amounts of pollution can potentially affect our lives in a negative manner. Driving cars and the use of plastic is essential to our daily lives, but we use them without the concern for how they are affecting the habitats on Earth. Some people think that the chance that they are doing harm to the ocean is less important to them than cost or inconvenience of fixing a pollution problem. Through sources from researchers and scientists, they have found evidence of pollution caused by the two essential commodities in our lives, plastic and burning fossil fuels. Environmentalists have found solutions to reduce the plastic waste in our ocean as well as attempting to reduce carbon dioxide emissions in the atmosphere…

In Garbology: Our Dirty Love Affair with Trash, written in 2012, Edward Humes, a Pulitzer prize and PEN award winning journalist and author in California, educates his readers on the economic, social, and environmental issues revolving around the waste. Humes determines that the only way to “fix” our mess is to change our behaviors and become less wasteful. In part one of Humes novel, Garbology, he informs readers of the landfill, Puente Hills, the largest active dump in the country, and the hazardous materials, such as “leachate”, that is infecting the area of Los Angeles County (25).…
