Reusable Food Consumptions

Improved Essays
Through a look at my consumption, it is easy to say that I consume the way I do because it has always been the same. I have never been the person to make as much trash as possible; I have always been conscious about my impact on the environment from a young age. Carrying around the bag of trash for this assignment, I realized that most of what I throw away consists of food wrappers, paper products, and plastic McAlisters cups. I did not keep any of the hygene items in the bag, but I do have a significant amount of those that I use. I recycle as much as possible from water bottles to cardboard boxes to cans. One thing I consumed a lot was food wrappers from granola bars. I play club volleyball and we happened to have an away tournament this past weekend. I kept all my snack bar wrappers and realized that that made up a significant amount of my trash, proving to me that different lifestyles consume and then produce different amounts of waste. …show more content…
Everywhere you turn, there are signs or people saying to recycle or reuse materials. One great example of how App tries to keep consumption low is by promoting the use of reusable water bottles from the many fountains there are on campus. This type of system helps keep students accountable for the damage they can do the environment. By living on campus, I do not drive to and from places anymore, and I only take the bus if I need to go to Walmart. Back home I would drive every day for an hour or more, leaving large amount of air pollution. Also since living on campus, the accessibility to recycle bins is more than I had before. By having this easy accessibility, I believe that most students would agree it helps keep them aware to

Waste consumption in the United States has been a really big problem of this century and our waste habits are even a bigger problem. The book of Garbology, written by Edward Humes, uncovers the habits of Americans. Humes writes about a woman in chapter 11 named Bea Johnson who is an advocate for not producing trash. Humes states she has been producing no more than a size of a glass a year on waste. Johnson has also been finding ways how to produce less trash and she came to the conclusion if there was less trash being produced the happier her family was.…

Everything from the kind of bathing wash we purchase to our ignorant mindsets plays a direct role in our wasteful habits. “ I believe that solution to our environmental problems starts at home” (Bea Johnson 280) I have concluded that the reason for our consecutive wasting is our fixation with convenience. It’s easier to buy goods already packaged instead of bringing our own containers and jars to markets; however we miss that it can be less expensive. “More than 10% of the cost of things lies in the packaging” (Humes 275). Tossing an empty soda can into the trash that’s closer feels more efficient than taking the extra time to recycle; nevertheless we don’t think about energy.…

In No Impact Man, Colin Beavan discusses many important topics, one of which is about trash. This topic got my interest because we see it everywhere, Colin goes into detail and discusses a lot of facts about it. An interesting observation was made regarding the black color of trash bags, that the reason trash bags are black instead of transparent is because people do not or cannot deal with seeing what is inside of them. Another related topic that always gets my concerns is recycling our waste. There are a lot of people that don’t recycle and just don’t care.…

I try to recycle as much as I can now, however, it is hard when you have very limited sources to help give back to the environment. In respect to the foods I consume, I recently learned to compost my leftovers, thanks to a friend for informing me of how I can make a change to this world even just by doing the littlest things. Also, keep in mind, I live on campus and eat at the dining halls so my food options are very limited and it’s harder to eat healthy and environmentally friendly foods since they provide the foods and it’s either you eat it or you…

I was raised in a very wasteful environment; I lived in the small town of Crosby, Texas until I was 14. There, few people recycle and, with less money to spend, fast food is a frequent meal. People there don’t have the time or money to buy the most environmentally friendly, or healthy choices. My father was as anthropocentric as it is possible to be. He spoke often about how global warming was a hoax and saw little need for conservation of animals or forest.…

Inspired by a forsaken orange that sat in a North Carolina parking lot, Jonathan Bloom wrote American Wasteland to examine the growing problem of food-waste in America. I think Bloom did a tremendous job by presenting this looming issue. His numerous anecdotes pertaining to food-waste creates an innate sense of relatability, which in turn direct readers’ attention to the statistical and logical presentations of the issue. This is an impressive feat because Bloom avoided coming off as preachy or judgmental in a book that attempts to raise awareness of something that general Americans have already decided it’s not important (xvi). As a result, Bloom’s systematic way of examining every aspect of America's habit of wasting food comes off as interesting…

    Food Waste In America

If you are like the average American and have had your office/group Christmas party already, then you probably threw away enough green bean casserole, store-bought sugar cookies and potato salad to fill a trash can. Most modern American families threw away enough Thanksgiving leftovers to make the bellies of a third-world family bulge for a week. About the only concern we have for the broccoli and ham leftovers is hoping the neighbor’s dogs don’t get into the garbage. While it is most evident during the holidays, the problem of food waste is a whole lot bigger than what to do with week-old turkey.…

The top two most common things littered are cigarette butts, and fast food packages. Smokers don’t think throwing their cigarette butt out the window or dropping it on the ground is littering, but it counts for 50% of items littered (King, 2013). The trash disposed of on the ground could take years to disintegrate, making it an item that must be picked up and taken to landfill or it will damage the environment. The pollution…

In everyday life, we can see green sign everywhere that reminds us of the environment. The color green gives us the motivation to save the Earth. The first step to approach the goal is to recycle. “According to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, more than 75 percent of material destined for a landfill could be recycled” (Go Green, 12). This situation shows us that most people do not aware of recyclable objects when they are putting up the trash.…

It really isn't that difficult and that is what makes it so confusing that some people would rather throw their recyclables in the trash then leave it on the trash can. Secondly was the amount of food wasted. The percentage of food wasted in America is 40% of all food, that amount seemed to immense and I wasn't sure I believed that it was true. But, looking at all the food in the trash can that amount seemed to be around the right number but a little less than that which was a good thing to see. However, even the leftover food can have another purpose, it can be used for fertilizer after it decomposes and as slop or food for certain animals.…
