Lack of academic achievement as early as elementary school is one predicator of leaving school early (Christopher, 2013). Based on a research on Stanislaus County, there are three main reasons why students drop out of school: parent engagement, academic performance, and family economic needs (Christopher, 2013). The research highlights that parents play a necessary role for a child to be successful in school, and if parents do not hold high ambitions for their child’s educational achievement, their child will not realize the goal of going to school and doing well. Another key reason the research indicates on students dropping out of school is academic performance; school readiness impacts the future academic success of a child (Christopher, 2013). The first characteristic is that adult learners need to be free to make their own choices during their learning process, so that they should feel active participants, and responsible. When adult learners are forced to follow the rules set by the teacher, they would not be motivated and drop out before finishing. Second, because they have a very specific goal they want to gain when they decide to enroll in a course. Teachers can help adult learners by setting goals clearly for them. Third, adult learners have wide experiences that come from previous education experiences; it is important that teachers assist them in connecting their learning with all these experiences to keep them motivated by finding the link between what they know and what they are learning. Fourth, adults are relevancy-oriented, so whatever adults decide to learn, it should be relevant to their responsibilities. Educators should clarify goals and objectives for adult learners to enhance the learning process. Fifth, Adults are practical, so they are always focused on what can be useful to them in their work. Educators have to be very specific in telling adult learners how the lesson will help them with their work. Last characteristic of adult learners is that they need to be treated with respect.
