Retroviruses are a group of viruses containing single stranded RNA genomes. ssRNA genomes require conversion to dsDNA in order to propagate. This conversion is accomplished after the enveloped viruses attaches to a specific receptor on the cell membrane of its host. Once attached the virus can enter the cell via fusion, their genomes uncoated and signals the start of replication. Viruses have three genes that enable their replication and spread; gag, pol and env. The viral RNA genome is protected from the host by its gag protein, pol then uses reverse transcriptase to transcribe their RNA into cDNA, which is then turned into double stranded DNA.
