Retinoblastoma is a major problem as it causes loss of eyesight and if not treated, people may perish. This cancer is treatable in its early stages, but many people in developing nations are lost to this dreadful disease. In developing countries, nearly 87% of people who contract this disease from their parents die because of poor medical attention. The children that survive this unwelcome disease are left with moderate visual imparities for the rest of their life.
Every year, approximately 10 to 14 million children between the ages of birth and four years old face this problem in America. The fact that it is confined to the eye makes 90% of the cases treated. The current problem of this disease is the incapability …show more content…
Retinoblastoma also has a very positive impact on cost as treatments can cost as low as $1,000 per year in some cases. This cost is extremely low compared to other treatment methods such as chemotherapy.
Another very commonly used method of healing is chemotherapy. There are four forms of chemotherapy: systemic chemotherapy, periocular (subtenon) chemotherapy, intra-arterial chemotherapy, and intra-vitreal chemotherapy. Organ transplants can cost as much as $1,000,000 which is a very large price for patients to pay. Even when someone pays the price for organ transplants, 25% of kidney transplant recipients and 40% of heart recipients experience organ rejection. If this does not happen, patients are also at risk of short-term and long-term medical issues like pneumonia, blood clots, organ failure, and more. When we look at stem transplants, a health risk is that an organ can grow larger or smaller than the expected size. The larger concern is that if the stem cells are not differentiated from their original cell type, it can form a cancerous tumor. This can lead to many more problems than wanted and expected.
We see that this is a fairly modern technology. Like many new technologies, they come with pros and cons. In this there are a plethora of cons that are listed above. Over time, this technology will hopefully become more effective and can safely treat patients in the future with minimal or no side-effects.
In conclusion, we see that retinoblastoma is a serious issue and without proper care, can create a major problem. We see the treatments and precautions that can be taken to cure and successfully get rid of the disease in your body. With these treatments, many thousands of lives saved every
