Human Growth/Development and Disabilities Human growth and development involves many vital stages in human life. These stages comprise of physical, emotional, mental, and social developments. An individual may face many challenges when going through the motions of growth and development. An individual with a disability may face even more challenged during growth and development, however, all individuals have a disability or not have the ability to face challenges and become successful. David DeNotaris is a living example of an individual with a disability, Retinitis Pigmentosa, who overcame such challenges and became a successful motivational speaker.

A counselor provides services to help enhance an individual’s wellbeing and mental health. Millions of people in the world have diseases that are either common, rare, undiagnosed, or even terminal. Diseases/disorders can affect how a person function in life, it can affect their wellness and mental health if the individual does not manage with the condition appropriately. According to Broderick and Blewitt (2015), it is important for counselor to understand both physical and physiological aspects of individuals. The environment may cause genes to react or not react to certain triggers. As a counselor understanding that the environment play a role in an individual physical and mental health increases their competency to provide effective services. This understanding reduces the chances of counselors placing blame on one thing rather than exploring the interconnection of heredity, genes, and the environment. Counselor should avoide attribution, a term in counseling known for “attributing the problem primarily on the client without giving sufficient consideration to the environment” (Hays, 2013, p.
